PostSubject: The Unexpectations of the Unknown   Thu Apr 19, 2012 3:34 pm

Usually Xantrex didn't bother going into the Unknown, but he'd become curious. If space itself warped in the Unknown, then what would happen to time? If he tried to manipulate time in the Unknown, would he be able to? Would it summon Silence, if he tried to manipulate the creature's domain? Or would he find a way to manipulate the time and space of the Unknown so that he could find a way to reach the center of it? Was there a center? Or was the Unknown another dimension, an endless universe separate from his own?

As a scientist, Xantrex was curious and thirsty enough for this knowledge that he decided to venture into the Unknown alone. He never let the gates leave his sight though. That would be risky. He didn't know if he could change his age here long enough to find his way out, should he get lost. Finding an open spot, Xantrex slid to the ground sitting and pulled his bag off, letting his grey cloak fall around him messily. In the Unknown, it was best not to wear colors that would give you a special attention to creatures. Like the Akatsuki cloak did. He didn't trust his strength enough to be cocky about a place he knew nothing about.

Xantrex pulled out a glass jar and ripped a flower out of the ground. It was barely blooming. Putting it into the jar, Xantrex closed it and sat it in front of him before doing a jutsu and picking the jar up by the top. He watched what happened inside and it was not what he'd expected. He'd been trying to fast forward time, to get the flower to bloom. What happened was a mass of swirling colors that looked like gases of some sort before the flower disintegrated altogether. Xantrex blinked. "What...the hell?" Putting the jar down, he pulled out a notebook and pen and started jotting down notes.

'In an attempt to bloom a single flower bud pulled out of the ground of the Unknown, I witnessed something strange. A mass of swirling gases had surrounded the flower and before I knew it all that was left were ashes. My first hypothesis is that anything taken forcefully from it's natural environment in the Unknown will destroy itself. No ideas on why this may be. More testing is needed.'

"....Don't go Kazu, we were only joking," called Hanabi as Kazuma stormed out of the house. She wasn't being sincere in the least. Kazuma could here both her and Rin still laughing as he cleared the stairs and headed down the street, his head bowed. I wish I was never born, he thought to himself. Rin and Hanabi are always making fun of me. Dad thinks I'm a disgrace and Mom doesn't give a damn! Kazuma punched the side of a wall. He knew being angry wouldn't change anything but it wasn't fair. He was going to be able to fly without the use of jutsu or summonings. He'd figured it out eventually. It was called trail and error. Unfortunately he had more errors than success and it was only making his family even more annoyed with him. I wish there was someone out there who could see my vision. Someone who sees the world as I do.

Kazuma sighed and started out of the village. He needed some time to think. Before he knew it he was at the Unknown. Not a bad place to end up. It was a place filled with mysteries. He looked around, he saw no one around. If he went in there he probably would get lost or killed, but it was for the sake of proving to his family that there was more to just being a ninja. There were things out there that no one was trying to accomplish, and he could be just that person to do it. A smile spread across his face and he entered without a second thought. It was quiet inside the Unknown. An eerie quiet that made his skin crawl. "No going back now," he said aloud just to prove to his brain that he was still on earth and not in some far away dimension that he'd never be able to escape.

Starting forward he went deeper into the mysterious place. Overhead he could see things moving through the trees. He suspected monkeys, but they had odd shaped heads and if his eyes weren't fooling him, they had two sets of arms. Kazuma wished he'd brought his notebook so he could make a quick sketch, but he hadn't. It was his loss, but that was okay. Because this was what he was talking about. This forest was the exact meaning of what was out there that his family didn't see. Kazuma was so enthralled with the Monkey like creatures that he wasn't aware that he was approaching someone.

Xantrex froze in his writing as he heard footsteps. He also heard movement in the trees above, where there had been none before. He swiftly pulled out a kunai and quietly put his things down, rising to his feet. He looked in the direction of the footsteps, but again, what he saw was not what he expected. It was a boy, hardly seeming to be in his teens. But this was the Unknown, that could be anything, so his guard didn't drop. "You," he called out. "What are you doing in the Unknown?" he kept his distance from the kid, but didn't move from his spot. He held the kunai in front of him in a way that the boy could definitely see it. He wondered what a boy like that was doing in the Unknown, if he was even a boy at all.

Kazuma was watching the creatures jump from tree to tree. They were amazing. The distance they covered where far greater than that of a regular primate. His amazing soon turned to alert when he heard someone call out to him. Kazuma turned and saw a blond haired man with a kunai in his hands. "I-I'm...." He trailed off. Where had this guy even come from? And what more was, how was he supposed to be questioning Kazu when he too was in the Unknown. Recovering from his nervousness, Kazuma tried again at answering. "I'm studying the creatures up there," he said, pointing into the trees where one could clearly see the group of primate-like creatures had stopped to view what was happening. They're almost like us. I was observing them, and now they're observing me. "Why are you here?" He asked. Kazuma was keeping an eye on the kunai. He may not have been the best ninja in the Snow, but he wasn't necessarily the weakest either. He knew how to fight back.

(Ha. You? Fight against me? Again, ha.)

Xantrex raised an eyebrow at the kid. He didn't look like much of a scientist, to be studying things in the Unknown. Nor did he look all that experienced. Though now that those things were up there, Xantrex couldn't help but look up at them. A thought wandered into his head, causing a curious gleam in his eye. What if he tried to fast forward the life functions of the more complex organisms living here? Would they too disintegrate? Realizing he'd lowered his kunai a bit, Xantrex looked back to the kid, but didn't raise it again. "Research," he said plain and simple. "I wanted to see just how different time and space are in this dimension compared to our own. You are from the Valley's, I assume?" Xan had seen the headband. It read Snow. The Snow had recently attacked the Stealth. He wondered if this kid had been part of the attack.

Once more, Xantrex looked up at the primate like creatures. Had they followed him and he just hadn't noticed until now? Or did they just happen to stumble upon him with this kid following them? What were the odds? But perhaps in the Unknown, the probability of chance encounters were the opposite of what they would be in his dimension. Who knew? But as he watched the primate-like creatures, Xantrex's mind wandered somewhere different. If they did disintegrate when time around them changed at a real rate, had Xantrex found a way of defending himself enough to wander through the Unknown alone? A slight grin found it's way onto Xantrex's face. "Fascinating place, isn't it?"

(I'd win you know.)

Kazuma wasn't sure if this was all real. What if the Unknown was just creating this to make it seem like this guy was real. Kazuma hated not knowing the answer, but it made it all the more interesting. I mean, what were the chances of Kazuma meeting someone who cared about research? What a day this would be if this guy was real. Kazuma didn't pay much attention, but the kunai had been his main focus. He'd noticed how the man in grey had seemed to let his guard down some. "Yes, I'm from the Valley's," he answered. "Where are you from?" He asked. He didn't see a head band. However, he did answer the other question. "It is interesting and this is just a piece of it. Who knows how much of the Unknown there is to explain."

(Hahaha! Oh my, a bit full of ourselves, aren't we?)

Xantrex looked at the kid for a moment before grinning. "Don't worry about it," was his only response. So it may have been a bit suspicious. It was suspicious being in the Unknown alone. So really, both of them were suspicious characters. Xan only a bit moreso. He blinked when the kid said almost exactly what had been going through his mind only moments before. This was something else. So the kid was from the Snow, and interested in studying things. Unusual things. Xan didn't know much else about the kid's life, but he had hope that maybe he'd just found someone to be his student. "Perhaps too much for one lifetime," he said with a grin. He then shook his head a bit. "No, definitely too much for one lifetime," he said, looking up at the primates before he knelt down and started putting the notebook and the jar back into his bag. He didn't bother with the kunai anymore. He'd stuck it idly in the ground next to him.

(If you're referring to yourself then yes.)

Kazuma Saitou generally didn't interact with people, but this guy, who's name he still didn't know was someone that he could come to know. Any person that had passion for science could be a friend of his. Kazuma was also aware that maybe spending some time in here would give him some ideas on how to fly. Maybe there was a creature in this place that he could use as a base structure. "Um, can I...er, can I see that notebook...actually just a sheet of paper and a pencil. I want to get a sketch, but I don't have anything with me." He gave a weak smile. "If not then that's fine. I have a photographic memory." It was how he passed all his classes. But his parents didn't care about that, they cared about fighting. Speaking of, he wondered if they were worried about him. Probably not. As he waited he wondered what the guy was getting at saying it'd take more than a lifetime to explore the place.

(I am most certainly referring to you. Child.)

Xantrex stopped and looked at the kid as he asked to see the notebook. For a moment there was a small frown on his face, but then he shrugged, pulling the notebook out and turning it to a clean page before walking over to the kid and handing it to him. The rest of the notebook was filled mostly with sketches and notes of what, to anyone else, would probably just seem like random objects. There were also a few intricate equations next to each sketch. Going back over to where his kunai was, he pulled it out of the ground and put it away before he paused, his back to the boy. He'd just said he had a photographic memory. Xan turned to look at the boy in what seemed like a casual manner, but right now thoughts were streaming through his head. Photographic memories would be an ideal trait. But if he turned a few pages in that book, he'd know most of what Xantrex had been researching. Not that he'd understand half of...no, more than half of it, but even so. Xantrex was iffy about letting others see his work. But, if worst came to worst, he could always kill the kid and no one would be any wiser. Most of it depended on what happened during the next few moments though. Giving a shrug, Xan leaned back against a tree and looked up at the primates. It would be nice if one would come closer. He was curious about their anatomy. How different were they from normal primates? Xan stole a glance at the kid. "What's your name kid?"

(I'm not a child.)

Kazuma saw the frown and he thought Xan would not give him the notebook. It looked like he was wrong. "Thank you," Kazuma said quickly as he started to sketch quickly what he'd saw of the primates. Occasionally he'd glance up to see if he could get any other details. He was respectful enough not to go through Xantrex's notebook, even if he was curious as to what information the other had gathered. When he was finished he ripped out the page and handed the notebook and pencil back to Xantrex. "Thank you, again." He then stepped back, leaving some distance between the two of them. "My name's Kazuma." It was probably not smart to give his name out to someone who'd told him not to worry about what village they were from. That usually meant the person was a rogue, loner, or escaped ninja.

(Or worse, in this case. And you are twelve. Therefor, a child.)

Xantrex gave him a nod and stayed silent as the boy thanked him. He looked around quietly while the kid drew, looking back when his things were handed back to him. He took them and put them in his bag, but not before looking at the page under the one the kid had been drawing on. Although it was only a rough outline, Xantrex saw that the sketch wasn't half bad. Giving a shrug, he bagged his stuff and gave a nod of acknowledgement when Kazuma gave his name. "Xantrex," he replied in return. He wasn't sure how infamous his name was, but he didn't actually care. If it was as famous as Deidara's...well hell, he knew that wasn't the case. "Do you visit the Unknown often? You don't look like much more than a genin, it's dangerous to be here alone." Not that he cared.

(Whatever old man. You can't deny it since you're looking for a student.)

"This is my first time coming here..." He admitted. "But it surely won't be my last." Kazuma lowered his gaze when Xantrex mentioned how he looked like a genin. "I wouldn't be a genin if my sensei would allow me to sign up for the exam," he mumbled. Kazuma hated being reminded about how insignificant he was, even if it had been indirectly. But that disappointed disappeared the moment Xantrex spoke his name. It couldn't be. Kazuma raised his gaze and looked closely at the Akatsuki. "Are you The Xantrex? As in Xantrex Mabashi? As in the guy who turned the Death Kage into a kid?" Kazuma swallowed, but it wasn't out of nervousness, it was out of show. He didn't care that he was face to face with an Akatsuki, he cared that he was face to face with a genius! "How were you able to turn back time on a single subject? Shouldn't it have affected the entire battle?" Kazuma took a deep breath. "Are you able to go back in time? Or time travel?" He couldn't help that he was asking a million questions at a hundred miles an hour. This was Xantrex Mabashi!

(....I can most absolutely deny that. Given the fact that I can change my age at any given moment.)

Xantrex tilted his head a bit when Kazuma mentioned that his sensei wouldn't let him sign up for the Chuunin exams. That hardly seemed fair. It was a good starting point though, he could use that to his advantage. Though it hardly seemed necessary with what came next. He blinked when Kazuma started firing off questions. "You...know of me?" he asked, sounding a bit shocked. The shock faded when the Death Kage was mentioned, and Xantrex went back on his guard, though discreetly. He frowned after a moment, though it was one of confusion. This kid didn't seem at all irked that he was face to face with one of the more powerful members of the Akatsuki. "I..." It was rare that Xantrex ever found himself speechless, but now was one of those rare times. "Er. Okay, yes, I am Xantrex Mabashi of the Akatsuki. Yes, the same one who turned the Death Kage into a child. And yes, I can go back in time. That is all I will answer until you answer me. Where did you hear of me, and why are you...er, rather, you seem quite fascinated with the concept of controlling time, yes?" He paused. How to phrase this. Maybe he should wait a moment. "And calm down, will you."

(Thus proving you are an old man. Your appearance is that of a younger you to hide your true identity. Eventually your heart, kidneys, and liver will fail because you're not capable of reversing the aging of organs. So you denial is irrelevant.)

Kazuma couldn't be calm when standing in front of the world's greatest scientist, but he did his best for the sake of learning. "Um, my sisters were there during the war between the Akatsuki and Shinobi. They saw you turn the Kage into a kid and told me about it. I...I did some research but I couldn't find anything on time manipulation." Kazuma could have burst with excitement, but he was calm. "You must be the only person capable of doing so." Kazuma rocked back on his heels when Xantrex mentioned his fascination over controlling time. "If I had the chance to control time for a split second, I'd go back to the begging. I could find ancient jutsu long since extinct or meet the very first Kage's." Kazu rubbed the side of his arm. "...But I'm more interested in flying....So...can I ask more questions now," he asked the last part a bit embarrassed.

(But you don't know if I'm capable of reversing the age of my organs or not. Which, when you think about it, is possible, considering I'm changing the age of the largest organ of the body, the skin. So your argument is invalid.)

Xantrex listened as the kid told him that his sisters had told him. So the kid had ninjas in the family as well. He raised an eyebrow as Kazuma told him that he'd done research, but had found nothing. "Did you think you would?" He gave a small snort. "Time manipulation is strictly forbidden in the villages. The very thought of it sends those fool scientists scurrying into their holes," he said. He would know. He'd tried everything to find a village willing to take him in so that he could do his research. His last resort had been the Akatsuki. A decision he never regretted. It's not that he was the only one capable, it was that he was the only one willing to try something so risky. Xantrex almost looked disappointed as the kid said that if he could control time he'd go back to the beginning. He thought it was so easy, didn't he? Xantrex looked a bit curious as the kid said that he was more interested in flying. Well, that was quite interesting. "Hm. You can, but I won't guarantee answers. I don't just go around telling everyone and anyone what I do. Especially not some kid from the Valley's. With the knowledge I have, the Valley's could easily bring down the Akatsuki, and I will not allow such a thing." It was a trap in several ways. If this kid really was so interested in what he did, the only way to learn it all would be to not be part of something that wished the Akatsuki brought down. Which was pretty much every village and group besides the Akatsuki itself. And he was letting the kid know that the information he knew would lead to powerful things. Judging by the kids' disappointment at not being a Chuunin earlier, that might have been helpful. And lastly, he hadn't said straight out that he would not tell anyone about the things he did. He was sure to say that he didn't hand information out to everyone and anyone, but not that he didn't hand out information at all. This would help Xantrex determine just if he should try to coax the kid into being his student, or to give up. The kid seemed bright enough.

(My point isn't invalid. You must take time to rest, don't you. Like a cool down time, forcing you back to your original age. Some point in time you'll be too old to go back in time after that cool down point.)

Kazuma knew what Xantrex was talking about. He'd never told his family that he was trying to figure it out. Not because he thought it was forbidden, but because they'd only make fun of him. However, Kazuma wasn't going to get down in the dumps because Xantrex told him that he didn't just tell anyone and everyone what he did. "You don't exactly have to worry about me going back and telling everyone," he started. "No one would believe me. Especially not anyone from my village...." Yeah, Kazuma had done quite a bit of damage. Most, if not everyone in the village thought he was a hopeless case. Kazuma's shoulder slumped at the thought. He was tired of being the lost cause. The one everyone saw as some failure. If only he produce something that was even partially successful then he could show his father and mother, and Rin, and Hanabi. Then he'd be the one laughing and not them. Kazuma sighed. He didn't have the heart to be bitter with his family. Sure they had done him wrong, laughing at his failures instead of encouraging him to go forward, but they were still his family, and it wasn't their fault they were completely ignorant to something they could not understand.

(Ah, but you see, that is where there is flaw in your otherwise logical argument! You assume that I must rest, when in reality, I simply make the change of age permanent. It is not an illusion that one must ho...Wait. WAIT. I'm giving you too much information! You're not even my student yet! Ohoho, you are sly.)

"I'm more worried about if they did believe you," he grinned. "I might not be able to do my research in the Unknown anymore." He was serious, but his voice said that he was joking. It was an odd thing Xantrex sometimes did. He looked at Kazuma as the kid's shoulders slumped. "They don't think very highly of you, do they?" Xantrex left his bag on the ground as he took a few steps towards the boy. "I mean, your sensei won't even give you a chance to prove yourself, and it sounds like your village doesn't think you can do anything either. Hm. If I were you, I'd be dying to prove them wrong," he said with a shrug, turning around and looking up at where the primates had been. Well, they weren't there anymore. And...it was oddly quiet. Xantrex didn't like the quiet. Made him uneasy, especially in a place like this. "What about you then? It's obvious that you don't like being the laughingstock of your village." He looked over his shoulder at Kazuma. "Just what do you plan on doing about that?"

(Exactly. You're slipping old man.)

Kazuma gave a very weak smile. "I plan on flying," he said hoarsely. "But it's taking a lot more time than I wanted it to take. But I'm being patient. Usually I just suck it up, or I leave the house. I mean, my mom doesn't say much, but my dad makes it clear that he'd rather have a different kid. His only boy is a failure. And my sisters...they make it clear that they're better as well. I'm not exactly the star of the Saitou family, but I know I can be, if they'd just give me some time. I just need a break through." Kazuma sighed. "Even if I don't fly, maybe they can at least let me try for the Chuunin exams. Rin says my father told them not to allow me in because I'd only get myself killed."

(Call me old one more time, and I'll let you get eaten by the monsters.)

Xantrex leaned on the nearest tree and looked at the boy as he practically spilled out his life story, his arms crossed under his grey cloak. Xantrex was no counselor, but he did learn a thing or two about manipulating from watching Deidara do it. "Ignoring them doesn't get you anywhere. Your father wants you to be stronger, right? A real ninja? Sure, learning how to fly may give you an advantage, but you also need to focus on training. Research doesn't get you everywhere. It won't get you everywhere. You either need to try harder, or you need a better teacher." Xantrex shrugged. "Seems to me that it doesn't quite matter to your father just how it is that you get stronger." He was glad the boy had calmed down. All those questions had been annoying. "Maybe it's the fact that you just walk out of the house that bugs him. Maybe he wants you to confront him on it. To do something about it, to show him just how wrong he is."

(I can handle myself...old man.)

"I have tried confronting him," Kazuma mumbled. And that had not been the best idea. His father had dragged him to the training grounds to fight. Kazuma had not lasted very long and his sisters were ever so kind to remind him how bad he looked when he walked in the door all bruised and bloody. "Maybe I'll just give up my research. It's pointless anyway. I don't want to be a Genin until I'm 20." His father had already threatened to disown him.

(Yeah. Sure you can. Hmph. Can't even make chuunin, and you expect to handle yourself in the Unknown?)

Hmph. After that last part, Xantrex was starting to believe maybe this kid didn't have what it took after all. Maybe his standards were too high. He took a deep breath, then sighed. "Then quit being a ninja. If you don't think you're ever going to amount to anything, then what's the point in it? Trying to impress a father whose standard are set upon his daughters? I said research isn't everything, but that doesn't make it useless." He looked at the kid with a small smirk. "I mean. Look where I am. I was one hell of a wimp when I was still a genin. And I didn't like it." He paused. Why had he said that? There weren't actually many people aside from Deidara who knew what Xan was like as a kid, so why had he told this runt? Then again, using 'look where I am' might not have set the best example. But if this kid figured Xan was just that good, why not use it?

(oh great roll you old fart.)

"Are you calling me a wimp," Kazuma asked with a look of dead seriousness on his face. Not only was that an insult, but this guy had just told him to stop being a ninja. His father would kill him. "I think I'll be better off as a ninja. I can continue my research, but at a slower pace than what I'm going at. If I put it off for a few months then they'll see that I'm trying to be a ninja. And yes, my father is hard on me, and maybe his standards are a bit impossible at my current standings, but I'm not a quitter." Kazuma looked down at the ground, a frown coming across his face.

(...Screw the monsters, I'll kill you myself.)

Hm. Now just how was he going to do this? The kid was set upon being a ninja, so then this might end up being harder than he originally thought. "Hm. The way you act sure makes me think you're one," he replied nonchalantly. If he pissed the kid off, he pissed the kid off. Big deal. He pulled out a kunai and pushed himself off the tree to standing straight, his gaze wandering as he spoke. "That's probably a good thing then. If you're not a quitter, then stop being down on yourself. Makes everyone think that you're gonna give up." His voice was lower when he spoke, and his eyes were alert. It had been too quiet for too long. Something was up. No place stayed this quiet for this long. Xantrex slowly removed his cloak and placed it over his bag. It would only get in his way. His movements were slight, quiet, and it almost seemed that he was trying to blend with the shadows as he moved. He gave the kid no warning, however.

From a distance away, the large creature growled and sniffed the air. It smelled prey. And it was close. Normally it hunted with the pack, but they'd gotten separated chasing some other prey. He was the slower of his pack of five and hadn't been able to keep up. But he was hungry, therefor he was searching for new prey. Twigs had snapped under its paws as it walked, but once it smelled food, it's pace slowed and it's footsteps became more careful, more silent.
