(sure you will.)

Kazuma was starting to not like his idol so much. The guy was kind of a jerk to be honest. Kazuma mentally rolled his eyes and looked at Xantrex when he started to move. He'd noticed that Xan had pulled a kunai out of his peripheral vision and it made him want to back off. Was this guy about to fight him? That's when he noticed it. Xan was trying to move through the shadows. But for what reason. Kazuma chose not to ask why because he had a feeling that something was out there. Something dangerous. He hated getting that feeling. He did not want to be standing in the open when whatever it was came out of the bushes. But what if it was nothing. Don't kid yourself. The monkeys are gone and Xantrex has gone on the defensive. You've seen those kind of movements before. They're similar to the way sensei teaches us how to move in the Snow without being detected.

(...just stick to the damn plot.)

Xantrex looked at the kid as he just stood there like an idiot. Now he could hear slight movement in the bushes, with no wind around to be it's source. Xantrex looked again at Kazuma and tilted his head to the side in a sharp movement to tell him to move it. Either hide or run, was what Xantrex was saying silently. He hoped the kid could figure at least that much out. For now Xantrex had his back to a tree, a kunai in hand. Pulling a tag out of his pocket, he placed it on the ground without a sound. It was a shadow seal, something of his own invention. It would allow him to move through shadows where the tags were placed. He had them set up all over the country side. But who knew if they would work in the Unknown. Shadows were shadows, right?

Ookami strode ever closer to the smell of it's new prey. It thought it could smell two scents, but it wasn't sure. They were mixed together. Being younger, it was significantly smaller than the rest of it's pack, but it was still about twice the size of a fully grown lion. As it's paws padded silently on the ground, a small twig would break here and there, it's young movements still sloppy. But all it sounded like was wind brushing through the bushes.

(whatever)

Kazuma didn't need to be signaled twice, because when Xantrex directed him away, he heard the snap of a twig. The hair on the back of his neck rose and as quietly as he could he could behind a tree on the opposite side of Xantrex and horizontal to the sound of the snapped twig. Kazuma pulled a kunai. He was really, really hoping whatever was coming towards them was something small and manageable, or just another person wandering through. He knew the chances were slim to none, but a guy could hope.

Xantrex suddenly wished he'd taken time to set up more tags around the area. Because when he saw what stepped out, his eyes widened. It was huge. He'd never seen anything like it. And it was his slight, sudden intake of breateh that caused the creature to turn it's gaze towards him. Because of that, Xantrex also saw that it had slight horns on it's head. Just what the hell was that thing? If it had been any other circumstances, Xantrex would have wanted a closer look. Unfortunately, he got his wish. Immediately the thing lunged at him, snapping at his arm with huge jaws. The thing was slower than he'd expected, but still fast as hell. He'd managed to pull his arm away before the jaws had closed. Pulling out a kunai, Xantrex backed up and threw it at the creature. It only served to make it madder when it hit the horn on it's head.

Kazuma looked around his tree to see what was going on. "It's huge..." Kazuma wished he'd have stayed home, but there was no time to be whining about his screw ups. Staying behind the tree, Kazuma flipped his kunai and threw it at an opposite tree to distract the creature. Then, using chakra control he started up the tree. Attacking from multiple angles was the smartest thing to do right now. Pulling two more kunai he stayed behind the tree. If that thing spotted him, it would no doubt come after him and Kazu was not a Steath ninja. If he had to run, it'd be a waste of time.

The creature turned it's head when it heard something hit a tree. Xantrex took that opportunity to back away and throw a wave of about five shuriken at the thing, all of which hit it. The creature shakes them out rather easily, despite the fact that all had pierced the thing. "Damn," Xantrex mutters, throwing a tag by a nearby tree, and running towards it with the creature on his tail. Xantrex slides into the shadow, appearing out of the one that he'd placed the tag in earlier, then hides behind that tree. Peeking his head out, he looks around for Kazuma, only to see the creature smell where he is and start ramming into the tree with large cracking sounds, as if it were trying to bring the entire tree down. So the thing couldn't climb. Useful to know. What would have also been useful to know was that a second ookami was heading their way upon hearing the sounds of battle.

Kazuma was thankful for chakra control, but when the thing rammed into the tree he went tumbling to the earth. In an effort to save himself he threw a few kunai at the thing, praying it would move. Landing on the ground with a thud, Kazuma grunted in pain. This was not his day and it was only going to get worse. The second Ookami was charging through the bushes with as much speed as it could muster. Knowing the smaller Ookami of the group was out there, he was in search of it and the sound of battle. Jumping out of the hedges, it landed a few feet from Xantrex. Fangs bared it headed for the Akatsuki.

And indeed the ookami did jump to the side when the kunai were thrown at it, but it only prolonged it for a moment. As soon as it saw the smaller of it's two prey land on the ground, it was on the move. It crouched towards the ground before pounding at Kazuma, aiming to swipe a clawed paw at him.

Xantrex hadn't seen the creature in front of him until it was charging at him. Damn, now there were two of them?? He hoped that kid could hold his own for the time being. Xantrex jumped out of the way and rolled to the side, swiping kunai at the larger wolf as he went. His techniques were mostly for use in hand to hand combat and teleporting. He didn't want to overdo it with the shadows, else a bad outcome might result. And using time jutsu was out of the question. It drained him far too much to be useful in battle.

(coughcougholdcoughcough)

Kazuma rolled backwards out of the way. The kunai in hand he threw it at the creature and then stood up, ready to prepare for another attack. It didn't take common sense to realize that attacking this thing was useless. He needed something stronger, like jutsu. "Snow Style: Snow Rush." Kazuma threw yet another kunai, this time instead of just piercing the skin, it started to freeze the creature over. The Ookami was only aggravated by Xantrex's attack. Growling he swiped it's massive paw right where the Akatsuki was.

(You know, I was gonna take care of that Ookami for you. Now I'm not so sure.)

With the kunai piercing it, the smaller Ookami started feeling something cold, casuing it to shake itself out, which didn't help. So instead, it rushed at Kazuma, intending to run straight into him.

Xantrex looked at Kazuma from the corner of his eye as the kid did a jutsu. That was good, he had a good basis. But when he turned his gaze back, the beast was in front of him and swinging a paw. The paw sent him rolling to the side, large claw marks on the side of his left arm. Giving a noise of irritation, Xantrex pulled out what looked like nothing more than a sword hilt. However, a large blade sprouted from it when he did a jutsu with the hilt in hand. Though it was made primarily of chakra, it looked like a normal sword. Getting to his feet, Xantrex decided a close up encounter would be better, and he rushed at the creature, aiming a slash at one of it's paws. Forcing it immobile was the best option here. One of the only options he could see right now.

(sure you will. Your prize pupil killed because you were too stubborn to except that you're old.)

Kazuma couldn't believe this. The things was still mobile. He made a note to himself. Never enter the Unknown without being completely prepared to fight for your life. Not able to move away in time, Kazuma was knocked down. Blue eyes wide, he was thankful that the horn had not pierced his skin. Out of kunai he searched for the next best thing, a smoke bomb. He'd shove it directly in the thing's mouth if he had to. The larger Ookami backed away as the blade cut his forepaw. Growling in anger, he swiped out another claw, but was still backing away. He wasn't done yet.

(*shrug* I'm sure there's other kids out there who wouldn't mind being taught by me. Besides, whoever said you were a prize?)

The smaller ookami growled and shivered with a small roar as it continued to be engulfed by ice, though it could still move. It wasn't ready to give up. So when it knocked the boy to the ground, it approached quickly and went to snap it's fangs down on him, aiming for Kazuma's leg.

That was good, he'd managed to injure it. What wasn't good was that now the kid was on the ground. And...Xantrex's eyes widened and his chakra retracted from his blade, causing it to turn back into nothing but a hilt. He backed away from the attack and started a jutsu. An all too familiar feeling engulfed him as time slowed around him to what looked like a complete stop. The larger Ookami was stuck in mid swipe, and the smaller one in mid bite. Xantrex had to hurry over in front of Kazuma, because he could never hold up time jutsu's in the midst of battle for more than a few seconds. When he got over to the smaller Ookami, time restarted just as the wolf snapped into Xantrex's already injured left arm. The blond haired Akatsuki had to withhold a scream as blood streamed down his surely broken arm. With his right arm, he forced chakra back into the hilt to force the blade out, driving it into the creature's neck. A moment later, the creature stumbled back and fell over, bleeding and freezing over at the same time.

(I did.)

Kazuma wasn't sure what had happened or how it had happened, but it had and he was both amazed and fearful of what happened. Xantrex was suddenly there, stopping his leg from being ripped off at the cost of his left arm. Kazuma knew it was probably broken. When Xantrex killed the thing Kazuma immediately got up because while they were distracted by the smaller Ookami, the larger one was recovering from it's confusion and charging towards them. Kazuma honestly wanted to run, but he'd done enough of that. With little to no time to think, the blue haired genin flipped over the Akatsuki's shoulder and landed a kick square on the Ookami's jaw. The beast howled in mild pain and then recovered once more, but Kazuma had already retrieved a kunai from Xantrex. Snow Blades. The kunai changed into a blade of ice and Kazuma shoved it right down the thing's throat. It too dropped onto the ground; dead. Kazuma let out a shaky breath. Talk about an adrenaline rush. He looked back at Xantrex. "You okay?"

(hell yeah, how that for being a ninja! Come get some! Twisted Evil cheers)

(Hm. Not bad kid, not bad.)

With that wolf dead, Xantrex turned to face the bigger one that was now sure to be taking the opportunity that it had been given. But Kazuma was already on the move. He was actually pretty impressed by the boy's movements. So he wasn't completely useless. That was good to know. But Xantrex was facing a dilemma. The kid didn't seem to want to leave his village. Didn't want to give up. That last bit was good, but who knew what would happen to him if Deidara found out he saved a brat from the Snow without recruiting him.

With the second wolf creature dead, Xantrex looked around before stumbling back and leaning against the closest thing; a tree. He slumped to the ground with slow, heavy breaths, his face paling a bit. He tossed the sword on the ground next to him, causing it to retract to nothing but a hilt once more. "I've been better," he said. Hell, he wasn't going to lie. He could keep himself alive for as long as he wanted to, in terms of aging. However...being killed due to injury was something entirely different. Generally, if he could use both his arm, he could reverse time enough so that the damage wouldn't be enough to kill him. But with only one arm, there was no jutsu available to him. He was only glad those things hadn't been wielding poison. Even so, between the heat of the battle and the pain of the wound, Xantrex was sweating lightly, and he didn't look too hot.

"You?"

(mhm.)

Kazuma gave Xantrex a look when he said he'd been better. He was sure he had been. That arm looked bad and it reflected on Xantrex's person. "I'll be fine, thanks to you." Kazuma walked over and bent down next to Xantrex. The least he could do was try and help until they got out of this place. Speaking of, he'd lost sight of the entrance, had Xantrex too? Kazuma wasn't sure, but he'd heard rumors that if you lost sight of the entrance, then you'd get stuck here. He prayed it wasn't true. "Here," Kazuma said as he pulled out some bandages. His sensei had drilled into their squads head that keeping bandages helped save lives. Today might be one of them. Without any permission he started to wrap Xan's arm. "This isn't going to do much, but it'll suppress the bleeding..." He was trying to be careful because he knew it was broke.

Xantrex hated that phrase. 'Thanks to you.' Made him feel nostalgic. He stayed put, his head leaned back against the tree. He was tired. It had been a short fight, but a rough one nonetheless. For him at least. The kid was barely even injured, or so it seemed. He peered at the boy out of the corner of his eye when he started wrapping Xan's arm. Usually he would protest, but something was bugging him. He didn't like being in this position. He looked at the wolf's. He felt like a wounded animal, and he hated it. The second Kazuma finished, Xantrex stood up, taking his sword hilt with him, and looked around. His things weren't too far in the distance. He saw a shadow tag on a tree. "We should get out of here." He started towards where his bag and cloak were. They'd be hidden from sight to anything not looking for it. With his cloak over it, the lump looked more like a large rock. Bending down, Xantrex took the cloak with his right arm and threw it over himself before picking up his bag and standing back up. He'd have to go see Jaymaru. He looked behind him to see if Kazuma was coming. He wondered if he could still coax the kid into being his student.

Kazuma backed away from Xantrex once he was finished. Standing up he watched Xantrex gather his things. This was his fault. He should have protected himself better. Kazuma knew he should stop pitying himself, but when you tried to be optimistic all the time, eventually you had your spans of depression. Following Xantrex out, he knew he was in a bit of a dilemma. "Oh no..." He mumbled. He'd just helped an Akatsuki, and even though he could have claimed it was Lex Talionis, his village would not approve. There was no way he could go home and act as if this never happened. Kazuma's heart sunk, he'd just became homeless.

Xantrex looked at Kazuma as he heard the kid mutter something. "What?" He didn't stop walking towards the exit to the Unknown, since it was in sight range of his things. Shadow tags really were useful. Had he, perhaps, found a way to move through the Unknown? It was only when Xantrex noticed one of his tags that had been by his bag was missing that he figured out, nope, no way to travel safely through the Unknown.

Kazuma followed a bit silently after that realization, but when Xantrex asked him what he looked up. "I'm...I don't think I can go back to the Snow," he said. He kept the sadness out of his voice. Maybe it was a good thing. "It doesn't matter though. There's other villages around, and maybe I can actually take the Chuunin exam in one of them." He shrugged. For the sake of Xantrex not calling him a wimp again, he made it sound like it was a new opportunity, which it may just very well have been. Maybe it was meant to turn out like this. But which village would be okay with him working on research and training?

"Hm?" Xantrex said with a slightly raised eyebrow when Kazuma said he might not be able to go back to the Snow. For a moment he didn't get it, then the realization hit him. Right, he'd helped an Akatsuki. "What, you think that the other villages would accept you if the Snow won't?" He looked back in front of him. The gates were there, but every now and then they would fuzz in and out of focus. Xantrex gave his head a sharp shake and blinked hard, but kept moving. He'd lost too much blood. Right now all he wanted to do was sleep, but he would not sleep in the Unknown. He would not sleep anywhere but in the Akatsuki hideout. It was the only place that was safe. Even then...could he even make it to the hideout? Taking a breath, he decided to focus his efforts on Kazuma. "When you want to do unorthodox things, the Vallies look down on you. Teleportation, controlling time, space manipulation, flying...they're all dangerous, and so the villages don't like to allow such things. And people who try them become outcasts," he said lightly. He would know. "If you plan on continuing your research, either tell no one of it, or don't stay in the Vallies to do it, that's my advice. You won't find a teacher in any of those villages willing to teach you those kinds of things. Either that or...just focus on being a normal ninja like everyone else in the Vallies." His feet were dragging. He could feel it. No time to stop and rest though. The exit back into reality, back into their own dimension was so close. Maybe a short rest then.

Kazuma shook his head. "I don't have to tell hem what I did," he said shortly. "I messed up by telling my family and sensei what I wanted. If I move then they'll just think I'm a run away. It happens all the time. I'll start over and work in secret," he said. He didn't know how Xantrex got where he was, like getting stuck in the Akastuki, but Kazuma wouldn't be in need of that. He wasn't in that much trouble. Kazuma looked ahead. "And there's always the rogue forest where I can work, and here if I'm careful." He noticed how Xantrex was sort of dragging. Kazuma had been walking a few feet behind him, but moved up to walk side by side. "As for a teacher....I've been working on this by myself for a few a year and half now, I think I can handle not having a teacher." Although a teacher would have made the work go by faster than it was, the only one he could think of was Xantrex and the older ninja did not seem like he was teacher material.

(...)

Xantrex shrugged lightly when Kazuma said that he didn't have to tell them what he did. "But it would be hell getting papers to be admitted as a ninja in a different village." That was a lie. For an older, more experienced ninja, it might have been hell. But not for one as young as Kazuma was. Xantrex wanted to make it seem like it would be extremely hard for the kid, but the boy was smart. "But on the other hand, having a teacher would make things easier," he said plainly as they passed by the gates of the Unknown. They were finally back in the real world, but he didn't plan on stopping just yet. He didn't know if those creatures could leave if they had prey to follow. And at this point, he would be nothing more than prey. There was a long pause from Xantrex. Things would go a lot smoother if Xantrex just gave up his pride for the moment and admitted that he'd been on the lookout for a student.

(what?)

Kazuma had never thought of that, but then again, he didn't have many papers. He was only a Genin. "It shouldn't be too much work," he answered. Then he responded with, "I know having a teacher would make it easier. But who would be willing to teach me such techniques as time manipulation and things of the sort. You said it yourself, it's forbidden. I'll only be setting myself up by asking someone in the village to help me. They're too set on the less dangerous things like going to war for no apparent reason, rather than the oh so dangerous task of figuring out time manipulation and flying." Kazuma gave a huff.

(Nothing.)

"You'd be surprised." He looked at Kazuma as he asked who would be willing. Considering it was still mostly forest outside the Unknown, he stopped and leaned against a tree, sliding down so that he was sitting with a small sigh. He didn't want to walk too far with the kid behind him, especially if he wasn't going to be able to convince the kid to join the Akatsuki. The boy didn't need to know where it was. "Oh so dangerous?" Clearly the boy had been being sarcastic, and clearly Xantrex had not been pleased by that. "Do you have any idea how dangerous time manipulation is?" Flying wasn't much different either, it just depended on how you wanted to fly. Xantrex would figure that out later. He gave a shaky sigh. He was tired. Really tired. It wasn't normal. Then again, neither was that wound on his arm. "If we're going to be frank about things, I've been looking for a student. And if we're going to be honest, it's the only reason I haven't killed you yet." Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh, but it was true. "It's also the only reason I didn't let you get your leg ripped off earlier." That was also true. He'd give Kazuma a moment to let that information sink in. He could only hope that Kazuma could understand that Xantrex was actually asking a question, not giving a threat.

Kazuma stopped walking when Xantrex made everything clearer. "I wish I'd have know that earlier, I wouldn't have saved you either," Kazuma responded. Despite his response, he knew what this was about. Xantrex saw him as a potential candidate. "Theoretically speaking, since I'm technically homeless and I'm interested in time manipulation and things of the sort, would that qualify me as a candidate. But...I'd also have to join the Akatsuki too, wouldn't I? Theoretically speaking of course." Kazuma didn't want to join the Akatsuki, but he couldn't go home. Unless he too refuge in a small town in the open then he'd be up the creek without a paddle. He sighed. Was this how all the Akatsuki ended up getting recruited? If so then it was no wander they hated the villages.
